What is Asthma?
Asthma is a common lung condition that causes occasional breathing difficulties.
It affects people of all ages and often starts in childhood, although it can also develop for the first time in adults.
There’s currently no cure, but there are simple treatments that can help keep the symptoms under control so it doesn’t have a big impact on your life.
Symptoms
The main symptoms of asthma are:
● Wheezing (a whistling sound when breathing) ● Breathlessness ● A tight chest, which may feel like a band is tightening around it ● Coughing
The symptoms can sometimes get temporarily worse. This is known as an asthma attack.
Several conditions can cause similar symptoms, so it’s important to get a proper diagnosis and correct treatment.
Your GP will usually be able to diagnose asthma by asking about symptoms and carrying out some simple tests.
Treatments
The main types are:
● Reliever inhalers – used when needed to quickly relieve asthma symptoms (salbutamol) ● Preventer inhalers (steroid) – used every day to prevent asthma symptoms occurring ● Some people also need to take tablets.
Causes and triggers
Asthma is caused by swelling (inflammation) of the breathing tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. This makes the tubes highly sensitive, so they temporarily narrow.
It may occur randomly or after exposure to a trigger. Common asthma triggers include:
● Allergies – to house dust mites, animal fur or pollen, for example ● Smoke, pollution and cold air ● Exercise ● Infections like colds or flu ● Identifying and avoiding your asthma triggers can help you keep your symptoms under control

Ventolin is commonly prescribed as an aerosol inhalant administered through an inhaler. For most individuals, two inhalations should be taken every four to six hours. This usually comes out to about two inhalations four times a day. More frequent inhalations are not recommended.
To prevent exercise-induced bronchospasms, it is recommended that you take two inhalations of Ventolin fifteen minutes before physical activity.
The exact dosage and schedule will vary depending on the patient's age, body weight, and severity of the condition. Take the medication exactly as your doctor has instructed.
Do not increase your dosage or discontinue the use of Ventolin unless ordered to do so by your doctor. If you experience any adverse reactions, contact a health care provider. Your dosage may increase or decrease depending on your doctor’s orders.
You should store your medication in a closed container at room temperature, away from extreme heat, extreme cold, moisture, and direct light, and keep it out of the reach of children.
Most people either takeVENTOLIN 30 minutes before physical activityorVENTOLIN 15 minutes beforeanything from their daily diet.VENTOLIN may only be used to treat mild to moderate cases of breathing problems including wheezing, breathing difficulties, or a tightening of the voice box. It may also be used to treat postnasal polyps in children between the ages of 10 and 17 who are not responding to oral treatment with nasal decongestant.
While Ventolin is primarily used for the treatment of mild to mild cases of breathing problems, it is sometimes used off-label for asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or other breathing problems that are not directly linked to asthma or asthma symptoms. Some scientific studies suggest that Ventolin may be effective in reducing the duration, frequency, and intensity of asthma attacks.
Ventolin may not be safe for everyone. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss with your healthcare provider the following during treatment. They may test the medication to see if it is safe for you.

If you have any concerns about your dosage, contact your healthcare provider. They may order an allergy or skin rash test to assess whether the medication is causing any problems.
It is important to tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Sharing your medical history will help them make educated decisions about whether you should be taking Ventolin.
To reduce the risk of side effects, your doctor may recommend a dosage schedule for you. Take the medication one time, every day, and relieve any symptoms it does not contain.
If you are also taking an inhaler, may be able to provide additional information on how to safely take Ventolin.
To prevent sneezing, limit your intake of sugar-free products, non-prescription nose sprays, and all non-essential products. Check with your healthcare provider before taking any other medications while taking Ventolin.
To lessen the chance of asthma from worsening, try to avoid using at least three or more reliever inhalers every day. To help prevent bronchospasm, take Ventolin at leastonehour before your exercise activity.
To help reduce the chance of a worsening airway, take it regularly, and avoid two inhalations of Ventolin fifteen minutes before exercise.
